Edwards and O'Neil represent the initial names in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday after the team's 10-match without a victory start to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - both of who have previous links to the club - are part of the options to be considered by the club leadership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
However the ex- Luton manager - who played over a century of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a strong contender for the position.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys support from the club directors as they start the search of appointing a new head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a surprising choice considering he was released by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed which means the club would not need to provide any compensation.
