'Living a Nightmare': Loved Ones of Missing Teens Await News After Alpine Inferno
The loved ones of teens missing after a devastating blaze at a bar in a Switzerland's ski resort are facing an agonising wait for answers and appealing for clues about their family members via social media.
The blaze ripped through the Le Constellation bar in the alpine resort, located in the Swiss Alps of the Valais region, in the early hours of the first day of the year. Circulated video reveal the roof structure being engulfed in flames as beverages with sparklers are held aloft.
Officials have stated that it could take considerable time to identify the fatalities of the disaster, which killed four dozen individuals and injured another over a hundred. Officials noted on the latest update that the majority of the those hurt have been identified, with efforts continuing to locate the final individuals.
In the waiting period, families and friends have been using the internet to request information about their friends who were present at the venue that night.
Desperate Searches for the Unaccounted For
The fate of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, sixteen, are still unconfirmed, according to an public plea from his parent.
The resident of a town near Lausanne, informed a local newspaper that she had returned to Lausanne to see if he was in the hospital, while his other parent did the equivalent search in the capital, but was unsuccessful.
"This is a living nightmare, a horror. The options are finding my son in the hospital mortuary, or I find him in intensive care. Words cannot describe it," she told the paper.
She continued that some of his friends had been located with burns covering nearly half their bodies. "It's indescribable; they endured a terrifying ordeal."
The Italian government has said that six of its nationals are still unaccounted for.
Included in that group is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old promising athlete, who hailed from Italy but now living in Dubai.
The national sporting body has released a tribute that he is no longer with us, without mentioning the tragedy, paying tribute to a "young athlete who embodied dedication and authentic values."
His parent, reportedly stated that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around the new year. An official spokesperson has stated that a formal confirmation of his death is not yet.
Further Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, 16, is also unaccounted for. His parent told reporters that he had been on vacation but had ventured out with a group and ended up at the venue.
"A close friend said they fled after the fire broke out and that he had his phone with him, but then at a specific moment he lost sight of him," she explained, adding he had been wearing a identifiable gold chain.
One of his teachers stated, "He was known for his kindness and positive demeanor, coupled with great responsibility. Every time ask if get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Swiss and Greek citizenship but lives permanently in the country, was also at the bar on that night, according to media.
Her sibling has posted an urgent request online, saying the family has had "no updates" regarding the teenager or the three friends she was with, who are also reported missing.
Consular authorities from her other nation say they are closely watching the situation.
