‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s journey from injury table to scoring with Athletic Bilbao
Whenhe debut appearance the Athletic striker featured in England, an teenage representing Athletic Bilbao B against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Wycombe’s stadium in fall 2015, he found the net. The second time he played in the country, against the English side weeks after, he converted. The third time, against the Citizens soon after, well, he did it once more. Upon his comeback to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he did it once more. A spectacular strike, also. “In fact,” he remarks, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” Thus the club did their duty: they took him off.
“I got well angry,” the forward reveals, then chuckling. “I’m sure there’s footage. Our match against United and I was pretty good. They didn’t let me play the second half: I hadn’t yet signed my contract, goals were flowing, speculation was rife, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I came across reports about the Red Devils, the typical thing. I have no idea if it was accurate, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I feel lucky to be here.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At Lezama, the Basque Country, the morning session is ready to commence; after it, the brief trip to Loiu and another flight to the UK, now to play Newcastle in the Champions League on Wednesday. Just saying those two words brings a smile to his face. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for the team, partly because of the requirements of competing at this level. Losing in stoppage time in the local rivalry, they have secured just a single victory of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in European competition. Yet, take in the big picture, the big nights he has lived and upcoming events, and a sense of thankful reflection from him.
In the 36 months since he had returned to the club, the striker has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat along the Nervión river surrounded by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are countercultural and debuting in a long period. “I never imagined this,” he states.
He considered it hard enough just to make the first team and he was right. The son of the one-time rival player Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, the forward is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that developed the Arsenal manager, Xabi Alonso and the tactician. His move to Athletic came at 17 but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he went through a ACL injury, being released, a drop in category and a call back before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to enjoy the highlights of his career.
“Entering the youth system thinking you won’t reach the senior squad but with every stage you progress through you’re remaining and you can notice the proximity. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his first game and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and my knee gave way.
“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it shifted the outlook. Recovering from a long-term injury is hard, but it aids growth. You develop habits previously lacking. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then go home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, you have everything, so do everything. Work, precaution. Strength training. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.
“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. I look at photos of me before: I had slender legs. So what happens, happens. Look at pictures of me now and the change is dramatic. Injury made me see that. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”
Game time is essential. The striker moved upset in the pandemic season, in his early twenties, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he scored three times in 40 games. At Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and if one day the requirement appears where you play, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. To then win the Copa del Rey, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Little surprise he states savor the moment. All the more so after last year which, sometimes, was involved suffering. From top scorer with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
